11 - Pellet Stove

03/25/2025

This is an Italian-made pellet stove that acted as a secondary heating system to the primary gas furnace.  It provided a calming flame and the snapping of burning pellets as a nice centerpiece in the house.  It also saved us one harsh New York winter when our furnace stopped working and service took a week to schedule. This stove required a permit for which the county engineer paid us a visit.

1. I cut a hole in the house for the cold air intake and flute exhaust. After the installation of the flute pipe outside, the inspector signed off on my diy install.   Visiting the stove heating store that had both gas and pellet models, helped with advice on installation.

2. Flute pipes are double walled and prepainted with heat resistant paint. These parts are not cheap, there's no real way to save money here, but the stove itself was a good investment in the house.

3. The town inspector recommended tile flooring for the pellet stove, so we found a wood grain tile matching the flooring almost perfectly.
