06 - Recessed LED Lighting

03/25/2025

The living room had ZERO wired lighting surprisingly, both the previous owners and us used lamps until this point.  The hallway had a boob light and dome.  Installing small, 4 inch recessed lights were the right size for this smaller house, but also didn't extend past the attic beams, allowing for a subfloor installation. These recessed light fixtures came from Amazon cheap and did not exist at Home Depot or Lowes in this size.

1. My wife assisted me with installing the light fixtures in the living area.  We devised a system where she taped a bag around each 4 inch circle -> as I cut, the dust fell inside the bag --> after which I sprayed the dust in the bag from the attic with water to allow for minimal dust contamination when each bag was removed.  The air purifier was a big help here to determine whether my approach worked - which it did.

2. Electrical work is accessible and up to code, with extra wrap, tested for load and continuity with a multimeter, no less than 6" inches away from any insulation.

3. LED bulbs ensured each light consumed 5 watts in series. The living room had 8 in series, so 8 x 5 watt = the equivalent consumption of a 40 watt incandescent bulb!
